How Can Young People Participate in Home Stretch WA?

Home Stretch gives young people spaces to be involved and speak about choices that impact them. It is also important to acknowledge and value the impact of Out of Home Care (OOHC) Lived/Living Experiences, which continues to drive the work of Home Stretch. Young people should be given opportunities to participate in their communities, some examples of this are…

  • Working in a Lived Experience role
  • Truth telling and public speaking opportunities
  • Planning and organising events
  • Graphic designing communication
  • Peer Support roles
  • Consultation
  • Youth Advisory Groups
  • Running information Sessions for other young people

Lived and living experience have unique knowledge, abilities and attributes from their own life experiences, service use and their journey of recovery and healing, to support others and/or the leaving care system.

Hear stories from young people in Home Stretch WA

“In the past few months, I have gotten a job and Home Stretch helped me a lot with helping me get funds to be able to get stuff I needed for work, also gave me a lot of information that helped me about future savings and advice on who I can go to with future help. This has been very important as I have secured a job….Home Stretch is a great program and very supportive of young people.”

“Home Stretch has helped me in many ways. When I was homeless, they always made sure I had a safe space to sleep at night, food to eat, and a place to stay that was hygienic. While being homeless they supported me through transitional programs and went out of their way to help me secure housing. Now that I have my own house and baby, they are continuing to support me with anything I need, and whenever I need help, I know I can go to them. I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for the support Home Stretch has given me, even when I don’t need help, they are checking in to see how we are doing. Having no family support is hard, but it’s so much easier with the support of Home Stretch always being “there”

“I wouldn’t have know what to do with some stuff. They make me smile and laugh when things are hard. I feel I have someone I can talk to, and to help.”
